When I was growing up, a dentist was a dentist. If you had a toothache and needed a filling or needed to have a tooth pulled, you made an appointment and the dentist took care of everything that needed to be done. You only had to go to one office and the dentist performed any dental related procedure at that office. That is not how it works these days, at least that is not how it works with the dentist I go do. I'm not sure if it's due to insurance restrictions, or training restrictions, or licensing restriction, or if dentists and dental specialists have formed an alliance to refer patients amongst themselves ... but my regular DDS is limited in the procedures he can (or will) perform. If I need a root canal, or work done on my gums, or a tooth pulled or wisdom tooth extracted, I have to see a dental specialist. Is anyone else seeing this trend, or is it only my dentist? DDS stands for Doctor of Dental Surgery. That title doesn't make sense to me because my regular DDS does not do surgery of any kind. He only offers general and cosmetic dentistry. He will do regular cleanings and checkups, fill cavities, put on crowns and bridges, and do teeth whitening. Beyond that, it requires a visit to a specialist. I did some research and discovered there are several types of dental specialists. According to Wikipedia, in order to become a specialist a dentist must not only complete the required four years of dental school training, but must also train in a residency or advanced graduate training program. Once residency is completed, the doctor is granted a certificate of training. Below are the specialists that I am aware of because my DDS has referred either myself or one of my family members to one of them. If you need braces or a retainer, an orthodontist is the specialist trained in that. Specializing in Orthodontics requires an extra 2-3 years of training. If you need a root canal or implant, an endodontist is the specialist trained in those areas. Specializing in Endodontics requires an extra 2-3 years of training. If you have gum disease, a periodontist is the specialist trained in treating and preventing gum disease. Specializing in Periodontics requires an extra 3 years of training. If you need dentures, implants, or veneers, a prosthodontist is the specialist to see. Specializing in Prosthodontics requires and extra 3 years of training. If you have children, a pedodontist is the specialist trained to exclusively treat children from birth to the end of adolescence. Specializing in Pedodontics requires and extra 2-3 years of training. So let me hear from you. Does your regular DDS-type dentist do everything related to dentistry for you, or do you have to see a specialist for everything but routine care? |
